If you've kept the same wall calendar habits for the last decade in Elk Rapids or Bellaire, this is the summer to look twice. The two events that anchor the local year, Harbor Days and the Paddle Antrim Festival, are both landing on different weekends than muscle memory suggests, and the space between them is filling with programming that used to feel like filler.

The week Harbor Days moved
For most of the last seventy years, Elk Rapids Harbor Days has bridged the last weekend of July and the first weekend of August. That is the schedule that vacation rentals, family reunions, and the Grande Parade lineup have all been built around. 2025 marked the 70th anniversary of Harbor Days, which got its start as a one-day fundraiser in 1955.
In 2026, the festival runs August 5 through 8, one week later than the traditional slot. The Village of Elk Rapids attributed the shift to contract negotiations between the Elk Rapids Lions Club and Arnold's Amusements, an agreement entirely separate from the Harbor Days Association. The Harbor Days Association issued its public notice early precisely because many residents, visitors, and long-time supporters plan vacations and annual gatherings around the historic Harbor Days schedule.
What that means for locals:
- The Grande Parade and the Zambelli fireworks over the harbor now sit on Saturday, August 8, not the first Saturday of August as the muscle-memory version.
- The Wednesday-night Evening on River Street kickoff moves accordingly to August 5.
- If you rent out a spare cottage or a downtown condo during Harbor Days weekend, your peak-demand window has shifted a full week deeper into August.
That last point matters more than it sounds. The 2027 dates are already locked in, and Harbor Days is scheduled for August 4 to 7 in 2027, which means 2026 is a one-year anomaly rather than a permanent reset. Plan the Airbnb calendar with that in mind.
The Chain of Lakes weekend has a new center of gravity
The other unmissable event on the county calendar, the Paddle Antrim Festival, celebrates its eleventh year this September on the Chain of Lakes Water Trail. What used to feel like a paddling event with a party attached has become the reverse.
The paddling routes still stretch the full length of the county. The advanced two-day expedition covers Ellsworth to Bellaire on Day 1 (15 miles) and Bellaire's Ohio Street to Elk Rapids on Day 2 (27 miles), and the recreational option offers Ellsworth to Central Lake on Day 1 and Bellaire's Ohio Street to Dockside Beach on Day 2, running roughly four to five hours at a slow pace.
The social scaffolding around those routes is what has grown. The festival now stitches together three towns in three days, with a Kick-off Party in Ellsworth, a Block Party at Short's Brewing Company's Bellaire Beer Garden, and a Final Bash at Short's Brewing Company's Elk Rapids Pull Barn. Paddle Antrim has explicitly leaned into this, promoting free, family-friendly events all weekend long with live music, local food, and fun gatherings in the Chain of Lakes communities.
Translation for someone who lives on Torch Lake or Intermediate Lake and has never registered to paddle: you can attend all three parties without touching a kayak. The Bellaire block party in particular has become a de facto town event that happens to have paddlers wandering through it.
If you've written off Paddle Antrim as a race weekend that doesn't concern you, this is the year to reconsider. The festival is now the biggest three-town social night of the shoulder season.
The dates worth pinning to the fridge
The county's summer used to have two peaks with a lull in between. That lull has filled in.

FenFest is the one to circle if you haven't been. FenFest 2026 is scheduled for June 4-7 at the Grass River Natural Area in Northern Michigan, offering guided nature walks, kayak tours, workshops and a native plant sale. The native plant sale in particular is the kind of thing that quietly changes what a Bellaire yard looks like a decade later, and it sells out.
The Bellaire Chamber's Christmas in July programming is worth a mention because it turns what could be a dead week between the Fourth and Harbor Days into something you can actually plan around. The chamber has framed it as a full "Playcation" of beach days and holiday ways, which is chamber-speak for expect themed events on Bridge Street.
The trail that's finally getting built
Zoom out from the festival calendar and one infrastructure story is quietly reshaping how Antrim County's shoreline connects. The northern half of the planned Elk Rapids to Maple Bay trail secured a conditional funding commitment of $2 million from the MDOT Transportation Alternatives Program.
Two million dollars is not a full construction budget, and "conditional" is doing real work in that sentence. But for a project that has been in planning conversations for years, a state funding commitment on the northern segment is the first hard financial marker that a paved, non-motorized route linking Elk Rapids to the Maple Bay area could become a real amenity within a reasonable planning horizon rather than a permanent maybe.
For anyone who already lives along US-31 north of Elk Rapids, that is a slow-motion change in what your daily walk or bike ride looks like. For anyone who has ever mentally compared the Elk Rapids waterfront to the finished linear trails around Traverse City and found ours short, the gap is narrower than it was twelve months ago.
What summer looks like now
Put the three shifts together and the summer isn't a Harbor Days-plus-everything-else calendar anymore.
- Early June now has FenFest as a legitimate anchor for people who care about the Grass River watershed, and it's early enough to still get shoulder-season cottage rates on the way in.
- Late July has a chamber-organized run of events in Bellaire that used to be a quiet week.
- The first full week of August is Harbor Days, one week later than the reflex date.
- The third weekend of September, the Paddle Antrim Festival now functions as a three-town closing party for the outdoor season, whether or not a paddle is involved.
The county's summer used to be shaped by a single flagship weekend in Elk Rapids. It is now shaped by a series of tethered weekends, each anchored to a specific waterfront and a specific brewery or park. That is a genuinely different way to live in Antrim County, even for people who have lived here for thirty years.
